Fire Service Demonstration in Barrow in Furness
Vipond were requested to assist in a recent demonstration for Cumbria fire & rescue service.
Two houses in a condemned row in the town of Barrow were used for the demonstration. In one house Vipond installed a residential sprinkler system; the other house was left without sprinklers.
A fire was carefully started on an armchair in both houses at the same time.
In the house without sprinklers the fire soon started to take hold and large amounts of smoke filled the house. The fire brigade intervened after seven & a half minutes, which is the average response time for the fire service, and put the fire out in this house.
In the house installed with a sprinkler system there was no need for fire brigade intervention, the sprinkler system quickly activated to bring the fire under control and then extinguish it.
Pictures 1-4 show the devastation in the house where no sprinkler system was present, the fire has completely gutted the living room and hall in the short space of time the fire was alight.
Pictures 5-7 show the house protected by sprinklers, after the fire. As you can see there is very minimal water damage within the living room, however there is no fire damage to the room except for the armchair.
